Packing list : Ireland
Ireland’s weather varies a lot throughout the year, and it is one of the rainiest countries in Europe, especially in the west. There’s a chance of rainfall on most days, but it’s usually light and scattered. If you’re planning to visit Ireland, it’s always a fantastic idea to pack layers and be prepared for rain! Even though the weather can be unpredictable, it is still one of my favorite countries to visit. They also rarely get snow in the winter or very high temperatures in the summer, which makes traveling here any time of the year enjoyable.
Here's a breakdown of what to expect seasonally
Spring (March - May): 8°C - 14°C (46°F - 57°F)
Spring can bring a mix of mild days and chilly nights. There’s a chance of rain, but some days will be dry and sunny. Expect longer daylight hours as the season progresses.
Summer (June - August): 14°C - 20°C (57°F - 68°F),
Summer in Ireland is relatively mild and cooler compared to many other European countries. It’s generally the driest season, though occasional rain showers are still possible. The weather can be unpredictable, so it's always good to be prepared for varying conditions.
Autumn (September - November): 9°C - 16°C (48°F - 61°F)
Autumn sees a mix of mild and cooler days, with more frequent rain and wind as the season progresses. The weather becomes increasingly unsettled, with the first frosts arriving in November.
Winter (December - February): 2°C - 8°C (36°F - 46°F)
Winter in Ireland is typically cold but not extreme. Snow is rare in most regions but can occasionally fall in the higher elevations. Expect damp and windy conditions, especially along the coasts.
What to pack for your trip!
Clothing for All Seasons
Layers: Weather can vary, so packing layers is key. Include a mix of T-shirts, sweaters, and long-sleeve shirts that you can easily add or remove as needed.
Warm clothing: Even in summer, the weather can be chilly, especially in the evenings. Pack a warm sweater or fleece.
Comfortable pants/jeans: Make sure to bring something comfortable for walking around and exploring. Jeans or leggings work well.
Hat, gloves, and scarf: Depending on the season, you might need these for cooler days, especially in coastal or mountainous areas.
Sneakers/comfortable shoes: You most likely will be walking a lot, so make sure to be comfortable.
Weather-Proof Accessories
Umbrella: A small, portable umbrella can be handy.
Waterproof jacket: Ireland is known for its rain, so a durable, waterproof jacket or raincoat is essential. A lightweight, breathable one is ideal for layering.
Water-resistant shoes: bring comfortable, sturdy shoes that can handle rain and mud. Hiking boots or waterproof shoes are perfect.
Electronics and Accessories
Phone and charger: A smartphone is useful for maps, photos, and staying in touch.
Plug adapter: Ireland uses the Type G plug (three rectangular pins), so make sure to bring an adapter if your devices have a different plug type.
Camera: Don’t forget to bring a camera or ensure your phone has plenty of storage space for photos.
Portable power bank: It’s always handy to have extra battery life when exploring, especially if you’re using your phone for navigation.
Toiletries and Health Essentials
Personal toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, etc. (Ireland has good-quality drugstores, so don’t worry if you forget something!)
Medications: If you’re on any regular medications, be sure to bring enough for your entire trip, along with prescriptions.
Sunscreen: Even though it’s often cloudy, you can still get sunburned in Ireland, especially in the summer months.
Documents
Passport and ID: Make sure your passport is valid for the duration of your trip. (I recommend making copies of these and keeping them in different spots)
Travel insurance: A copy of your travel insurance details.
Tickets and bookings: Printouts or digital copies of any accommodation bookings, tour tickets, and transportation.
Credit cards and some cash: Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's good to have some euros on hand for smaller purchases.
Optional but Handy Items
Daypack or small backpack: Perfect for carrying essentials like water, snacks, a camera, and your rain jacket during day trips.
Reusable water bottle: Ireland has clean tap water, so a reusable water bottle is great for staying hydrated while traveling.
Small locks: To keep your belongings secure or if using lockers during your vacation, these come in very handy.
Travel pillow: Perfect for travel days.
For Specific Activities
Hiking gear: If you plan to explore Ireland's beautiful landscapes, pack hiking boots, a backpack, and weather-appropriate gear.
Swimwear: If you plan to visit beaches, hotel pools, or spas, don’t forget swimwear. You can also pack a small towel
Things to Remember:
Pack light: Ireland’s weather can be unpredictable, so you’ll want to layer and have options, but keep it to essentials to avoid overpacking.
Be prepared for rain: Rain can happen anytime, even in summer, so always pack a waterproof option and stay flexible in your plans.
With the right clothes, gear, and mindset, you’ll be all set to enjoy everything that Ireland has to offer!
